Dec. 25th, 2020 12:00 am- ilienne de matisse
- 33
- ishgardian elezen
- temple knight
- married and miserable
- born ilienne de tragenhaut to a knightly family sworn to house durendaire
- she quickly lost the favor of her parents to her younger sister, edrienne de tragenhaut
- edrienne was extremely sickly and in need of constant care and attention
- as the two sisters grew older, ilienne appeared to be the colder, more capable of the two, whereas edrienne was possessed of a warmer, more loving, cheerful disposition
- in reality, ilienne was simply prone to keeping her needs and emotions bottled up because she tried not to occupy her parents and servants any more than they were already occupied by edrienne
- when she is 21, she is betrothed to a man by the name of solellaux de matisse, a knight in the employ of the congregation and something of a rising star in ishgard
- solellaux is six years older, very handsome, and spends exactly one blissful afternoon with ilienne, at which point she thinks that she really could love him for the rest of her life
- joke's on her because solellaux lays eyes upon edrienne the very next day and decides that he is in love with her instead
- their parents don't give a damn, the wedding proceeds as planned
- ilienne is stuck in a loveless marriage where her husband is having an affair with her younger sister
- in the present day, ser solellaux is a fairly high-ranking officer, having become a second commander of the temple knights, one rank below lucia and handeloup
- the fact that he is having an affair with edrienne, his wife's younger sister, is something of an open secret in ishgardian high society — but who can blame him when ilienne is likely barren, more handsome than beautiful, and so very unladylike?
- she's tried to speak with solellaux many times over the years about making the marriage work, but he's just not really interested
- every time edrienne sees her, the girl just looks away and says "i'm sorry" like that's supposed to change anything
- tired of her life as an ishgardian noblewoman without heirs to manage or a husband worth being loyal to, ilienne decides to make use of the one thing she's ever been good at — swordplay — and joins the temple knights as a fresh recruit
- it's half to get back at her husband and half because she's hoping she'll just die on the battlefield
- at least solellaux and edrienne could get married then
